Nursing Home vs. Prison

I have been getting quite angry today, multiple people on my facebook have been posting this as their status:

“Place the elderly in prisons. They will get a shower a day, video surveillance in case of problems, three meals a day, access to a library, computer, TV, gym … Put criminals in nursing homes. They have cold meals, lights off at 20h, one bath a week, live in a smaller room and pay 4,000 a month !!!!! It’s Pretty damn sad that we treat prisoners better than the elderly!!!! Copy and paste if you agree.”

First of all, don’t post things you know fuck all about. I work as a nurse in a nursing home and I am quite damn proud of the job that I do! In a nursing home residents meals are always served hot, there are actually regulations that all nursing homes must meet or they can face a penalty. Most of the time in fact food is served and people find it too hot and have to let it cool to their liking. Lights are most definitely not off at 8pm! At 8pm there are still tons of residents up and the PSWs are busy helping get many ready for bed, most have to be out by 11, however that is only if they have a roommate. If they have a private room, they can keep them on all night if they want to! There is also regulations regarding hygiene. Residents are scheduled for 2 baths or showers each week. If someone was sick or soiled themselves and are in a big mess they may have another at times. Their rooms are definitely not smaller then a prison cell….especially if you have been in some of the newer homes. And $4000 dollars a month…I don`t know where that number comes from. Government run homes have an approximate rate that they must charge (approx $1800/month). This “rent” is paying for 24 hour nursing care, every meal and snack, doctors visits, laundry, housekeeping, etc, etc. Non government run homes (for profit homes) can charge more but NOT $4000!
AHHHHHHHHHHH I just had to have a good rant about that. Please look into all of these copy and paste crap things on facebook before posting it!
