Death and Dying

Death and dying are a large part of my job as a nurse. Working in long-term care a death is nearly always expected however it doesn’t seem like you ever really get used to it. Death is often welcomed especially if they have been through a long battle or are in pain. I have great responsibilities at times to care for these people who are dying; administering more pain medication, or a sedative to keep them comfortable, repositioning, comfort with a warm blanket, or just sitting to hold a hand. I had a long day involving these tasks today. A very sweet person is ending their journey in life. It saddens me as I really enjoy this person, but at the same time I am happy they will be in a better place. I know it’s ok to feel bad that someone died, that someone’s family is grieving. It can be hard at times to allow those feelings you have and then put them aside to care for the next person. I feel very blessed to be working with such an amazing group of staff and have a wonderful man to come home to. A good cuddle at the end of the day makes everything better.
